Construction Manager – County Roads

About the role

This is a hands‑on senior position leading an in‑house team of roadworkers and external contractors across a varied county road network in Dorset, South England. You will be based out of a council vehicle, spending most of your time on site overseeing works, solving problems and keeping projects on track.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the Construction Delivery team day‑to‑day, managing roadworkers and subcontractors to deliver capital and revenue maintenance programmes (resurfacing, drainage, improvements, general maintenance).
• Control budgets, programmes and resources, ensuring health & safety compliance and that work meets specifications.
• Deploy digital auditing systems, conduct regular site visits and safety inspections.
• Assume depot duties as Premises Responsible Person when required.
• Contribute to recruitment, staff development and the apprenticeship programme.
• Participate in winter maintenance and out‑of‑hours emergency standby rota.

Required profile

• Full UK driving licence, SMSTS certificate and CSCS card.
• NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations Management (or commitment to achieve within two years).
• Proven experience managing operational teams, delivering programmes on time and on budget, and understanding Principal Contractor duties under CDM 2015.
• Ability to motivate staff, manage competing priorities and maintain site safety for workers and the public.

• Familiarity with Lantra TM sector scheme 12D M7
