English Academic Mentor – 1‑Year School Position in London

About the role

This is a one‑year, full‑time position as an English Academic Mentor in a centrally located secondary school in London. The role is designed for recent graduates who wish to gain classroom experience before applying for teacher training or who simply want to support young people in developing their English and literacy skills.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with school staff to identify pupils who would benefit from mentoring.
• Discuss mentoring objectives with students and set clear, achievable goals.
• Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group support inside and outside the classroom to raise attainment, confidence and participation.
• Develop and record personalised action plans for each mentee.
• Occasionally conduct home visits to discuss progress with parents and suggest strategies.

Required profile

• Recent graduate with an undergraduate degree in English, Literacy or a closely related subject.
• Strong interest in pursuing teacher training (target start September 2027) or a genuine passion for working with young people.
• Ability to work with students of varying abilities and needs.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
