Land Ranges & Training Areas Officer (HEO)

About the role

The Land Ranges & Training Areas Officer will act as a key safety and assurance focal point for the British Army’s training environments. Based in Scotland, you will support the Headquarters Regional Command in delivering a "Safe Place to Train" by overseeing compliance, risk management and certification of land ranges and fieldcraft areas.

Key responsibilities

• Lead 2nd Line of Defence assurance activities for land ranges and training areas.
• Plan, schedule and conduct annual inspections, produce reports and recommend corrective actions.
• Monitor and support resolution of issues identified through 3rd Line reviews.
• Provide expert advice to Range Approving Officers, Range Administering Units and other stakeholders on safety policy and compliance.
• Interpret and implement MOD range safety policy and Defence standards.
• Maintain and verify Range Standing Orders, Risk Assessments and Environmental Impact Assessments.
• Support range certification processes, including issuing and re‑issuing safety certifications.
• Organise and contribute to Range Boards for new, modified, existing or closing facilities.
• Deliver training and guidance to range managers and users to improve safe practice.

Required profile

• Proactive, organised and able to work with a diverse network of military, civilian and external stakeholders.
• Strong understanding of safety, risk management and compliance within a defence environment.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to produce clear, actionable reports.
• Willingness to travel and undertake occasional overnight stays.
