Mid-weight Creative Designer (Publishing)

About the role

We are seeking a mid‑weight Creative Designer to join the Art Department of an award‑winning independent trade publisher. You will work within a small, collaborative team to produce compelling covers and interior layouts across a diverse range of titles, from children’s books to non‑fiction.

Key responsibilities

• Design and art‑direct book covers and interior pages, including illustrated and template‑based formats.
• Commission, brief, and manage illustrators and freelance designers through to final sign‑off.
• Create marketing, sales, and rights assets, as well as visual presentations for internal meetings.
• Maintain project timelines, follow critical paths, and flag any risks early.
• Prepare print‑ready artwork and ensure high production standards.

Required profile

• Strong portfolio demonstrating innovative cover and/or interior design for print.
• Excellent typographic and layout skills with meticulous attention to detail.
• Design degree or equivalent practical experience.
• Calm, organised approach to meeting tight deadlines.
• Effective communication and ability to collaborate with editors, marketers and freelancers.
