Prison Support Operational Support Grade – HMP Winchester

About the role

The Operational Support Grade (OSG) at HMP Winchester provides essential assistance to keep the prison running smoothly and safely. You will join a supportive team, performing a mix of desk‑based duties and physical tasks in a fast‑paced environment.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out security checks and searches at the main gate.
• Manage deliveries, supervise visitor access and escort vehicles across the grounds.
• Monitor telephone communications and CCTV systems.
• Perform desk duties such as record keeping and customer service.
• Assist with lifting, carrying and moving items as required.

Required profile

• Good communication skills and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
• Strong judgement, common sense and a collaborative team attitude.
• Willingness to work a variety of shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.
• Reliability in arriving on time for fixed‑start shifts; a driving licence and own transport are beneficial but not mandatory.
