Specialty Doctor – 1‑Year Fixed Post in Palliative Care

About the role

We are seeking a compassionate Specialty Doctor in Palliative Care to join a multidisciplinary hospice team in Ayrshire. The role is a 1‑year fixed‑term position delivering person‑centred care across inpatient and community settings, with clinical supervision from experienced consultants.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialist medical care to hospice inpatients and community patients.
• Supervise and educate junior colleagues, fostering a culture of learning.
• Admit patients, perform medication reconciliation and maintain comprehensive medical records.
• Participate in a non‑resident on‑call rota (1 in 6) to deliver out‑of‑hours specialist advice.
• Contribute to clinical improvement, risk management and audit activities.
• Liaise with GPs, hospital consultants, community nurses and allied health professionals regarding patient assessment and care planning.
• Support the development of the hospice’s strategic plan (SPA).

Required profile

• Full GMC registration with a current licence to practice (essential).
• Completion of foundation training (essential).
• Minimum two years full‑time equivalent experience in palliative medicine beyond foundation (essential).
• Experience managing patients with malignant and non‑malignant disease and emergencies (essential).
• Post‑graduate membership such as MRCP or MRCGP (desirable).
• Post‑graduate qualification in education, palliative care or a related field (desirable).
• Completion of a communication skills course (desirable).
