Substance Misuse Nurse – Prison Healthcare

About the role

We are seeking a qualified Substance Misuse Nurse to join the Health in Justice team at HMP Altcourse, a Category B prison in the Fazakerley area of Liverpool. This full‑time position offers 37.5 hours per week across a variety of shift patterns, including days and nights, providing a dynamic and varied environment.

Key responsibilities

• Work within a multi‑disciplinary team to deliver a nurse‑led substance misuse service and prevent hospital admissions.
• Conduct medication rounds, dispense controlled medication, and respond to emergency situations.
• Assess patients, perform reception screening, and run nurse‑led clinics for the target patient group.
• Provide evidence‑based, non‑judgemental care that is personalised to patient needs.
• Promote best practice, clinical supervision, and continuous quality improvement.
• Share knowledge and expertise to build safe, collaborative multi‑disciplinary teams.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse (adult or mental health) with experience in substance misuse.
• Legal right to work in the UK.
• Willingness to undergo additional vetting and security checks.
• Flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights, Monday‑Sunday.
