Assistant Gardener – Support Garden Maintenance

About the role

We are seeking a hardworking and enthusiastic Assistant Gardener to support the maintenance and development of beautiful gardens and landscaped grounds in Ongar. This role offers the chance to develop practical gardening skills within a supportive team, whether you have prior landscaping experience or a personal passion for gardening.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain gardens and landscaped areas through mowing, trimming, weeding, edging and general grounds maintenance.
• Plant, prune and care for a variety of trees, shrubs, flowers and plants.
• Prepare soil for planting by digging, cultivating and improving ground conditions.
• Assist with installation and maintenance of hard and soft landscaping features.
• Support plant propagation and safe removal of unwanted vegetation.
• Assist with pest control and plant feeding programmes.
• Operate hand tools, power tools and gardening machinery safely and effectively.
• Carry out basic maintenance and servicing of gardening equipment.
• Work closely with the wider gardening team to complete daily tasks efficiently.
• Follow health and safety procedures and maintain a safe working environment.
• Undertake any other duties required to support the grounds and gardens.

Required profile

• Reliable, punctual and self‑motivated.
• Good attention to detail and pride in maintaining high standards.
• Physical fitness for manual work throughout the day.

Required skills

• Full UK Driving Licence.
• Safe operation of hand tools.

• Safe operation of gardening machinery.
