Assistant Manager – Retail & Food Services

About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic Assistant Manager to join our team at the Melbick's Garden Centre in Birmingham. You will support the Store Manager in delivering a high‑quality shopping experience, ensuring product excellence and smooth daily operations.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and motivate shop staff, organise rotas and cover schedules.
• Maintain product quality, presentation and merchandising standards.
• Monitor stock levels, order replenishment and manage inventory.
• Ensure food safety, hygiene practices and compliance with company procedures.
• Engage with customers, resolve enquiries or complaints and drive sales.
• Support promotional activities and contribute to continuous improvement.
• Coach team members, assist with training and foster a positive team environment.

Required profile

• Experience in retail or food‑service operations, including stock management and merchandising.
• People‑management skills with a track record of supervising staff.
• Strong customer‑service and communication abilities.
• Organisational and problem‑solving skills for a busy shop environment.
• Basic numerical and cash‑handling competence, including POS experience.
• Previous supervisory experience in retail, hospitality or related sectors.
• Knowledge of butchery or farm‑shop products is a plus.
• Flexibility to work weekends and peak periods, and ability to stand for long periods.
