Backend Engineer

About the role

We are looking for a Backend Engineer to design and build the distributed systems, storage infrastructure, and platform primitives that power Augur’s real‑time sensor integration product. You will join a small, high‑impact team in an early‑stage company, shaping both the technology and the culture as we scale.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement distributed storage and stream‑processing pipelines using Rust and Python.
• Develop APIs, data pipelines, and service architecture that handle petabyte‑scale data.
• Own architectural decisions, ensuring zero‑downtime migrations and reliable services.
• Collaborate with product and infrastructure teams to integrate cameras and sensors.
• Maintain and operate production systems on Kubernetes, Kafka, and PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB.

Required profile

• Systems thinking with experience designing production‑grade services under real constraints.
• Strong software craftsmanship, writing clean, well‑abstracted code.
• Ability to reason under uncertainty and make sound architectural choices.
• Comfort with AI‑assisted development workflows.
• Proactive collaboration across teams with limited top‑down direction.

Required skills

• Rust (primary language) and Python (API boundaries).
• Kafka for messaging.
• PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB, and PostGIS for storage.
• gRPC and protobuf for service communication.
• Kubernetes for container orchestration.
