Criminal Defence Paralegal

About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Criminal Defence Paralegal to join our busy Birmingham office. You will support solicitors on a varied caseload and gain valuable hands‑on experience in criminal defence work.

Key responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive legal and administrative support across a wide range of criminal matters.
• Assist solicitors with day‑to‑day management of criminal defence files from opening to conclusion.
• Prepare legal documents, court bundles, correspondence and other case‑related paperwork.
• Organise, scan and electronically file documents within the firm’s case management system.
• Manage diaries, court dates, appointments and important deadlines to ensure timely progress.
• Liaise with courts, police stations, prisons, counsel, experts and other agencies to obtain updates and arrange appointments or prison visits.

Required profile

• Previous experience working within a Criminal Law department.
• Good understanding of criminal procedure and Legal Aid work.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a professional, empathetic approach.
• Strong organisational abilities and capacity to manage competing priorities.
• High attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a supportive team.
• Proactive attitude with willingness to take ownership of tasks.
