Director, Capital Delivery, Education Estates Directorate

About the role

This senior position leads the delivery of multi‑billion‑pound construction programmes across England, overseeing the School Rebuilding Programme and the removal of RAAC from the school estate. The role sits within the Education Estates Directorate of the Department for Education and reports to the Director of Education Estates.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate a portfolio of high‑profile capital delivery programmes, including the School Rebuilding Programme, Free Schools pipeline, and Further Education transformation.
• Provide strategic direction to multidisciplinary teams of around 300 staff, senior managers and external consultants.
• Act as Senior Responsible Owner, ensuring programme benefits, risk management and resource allocation.
• Chair governance boards, monitor progress, and make decisions on portfolio activity.
• Drive delivery excellence, promote modern construction methods and progress towards net‑zero carbon in the education estate.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in large‑scale public sector construction or capital delivery.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex programmes with multi‑year budgets.
• Strong stakeholder management skills with senior officials and external partners.
• Experience leading large, diverse teams and senior management groups.
