Director of Product Design - Payments
airwallex · London
Job description
About the role
Airwallex, the AI-native financial operating system used by more than 675,000 businesses, is seeking a visionary, hands-on Director of Product Design to define the future of its payments platform. You will own the design strategy and execution of core payments capabilities such as global e-commerce, point-of-sale, one-click-checkout and risk and compliance-critical experiences, partnering with product and engineering leaders across Payments and Risk and leading a team of product designers.
Key responsibilities
- Define a clear, opinionated design strategy for how customers understand and use cash, high-yield and credit accounts and inter-account transfers as organisations grow.
- Partner with product managers to frame problems, prioritise opportunities and embed design early in product strategy.
- Establish moving money into, within and out of Airwallex as a user experience foundation for other product areas.
- Lead end-to-end experience design: oversee research, object modelling, interaction design, research and testing, and UI design.
- Raise the quality bar for UX and UI in complex, data-rich screens (tables, charts, reconciliation views, approvals) across desktop, mobile web and native mobile apps.
- Drive a rigorous discovery and validation practice using research, experimentation and product analytics.
- Shape the rituals, feedback practices and shared standards that connect designers across regions and domains, and collaborate with the design system team.
- Lead and grow a design team of senior and staff designers across the London and Singapore studios, and build effective design-product-engineering partnerships.
Required profile
- 12+ years in product / UX design, with significant time on complex, system-heavy products (B2B SaaS, developer platforms, financial or payments products).
- 4+ years leading designers, including managing senior designers or design managers.
- Experience in online payments, risk and compliance or adjacent financial products.
- Proven leadership and influence: setting vision, aligning stakeholders and leading multi-quarter initiatives across teams.
- Comfortable debating trade-offs with senior product and engineering leaders and communicating complex financial and technical concepts clearly.
- Thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth environment with evolving priorities.
Required skills
- Deep strengths in interaction design, information architecture and UX for complex workflows and data-heavy products.
- Familiarity with user research and quantitative analysis to inform decisions and measure impact.
- Nice to have: background with API products and developer-facing experiences; degree in Design, HCI, Computer Science or a related field.
The role is hybrid, with teams collaborating in-office and remotely across regions. Applications are made through the company's careers site or its official LinkedIn page.
