Electrical Design Engineer – Naval & Marine Systems

About the role

Our client, a specialist engineering firm in Birmingham, is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to lead the design and development of high‑integrity electronic enclosures and control systems for naval and maritime platforms. The role covers the full design lifecycle, from concept through prototype, testing and production hand‑over, ensuring compliance with defence‑grade standards.

Key responsibilities

• Lead electrical design of complex enclosures, power distribution units and control systems for naval applications.
• Produce detailed technical specifications, wiring diagrams and bills of materials.
• Ensure designs meet maritime and defence standards (EMC, shock, vibration, environmental protection).
• Manage projects from concept to prototype, testing and production hand‑over.
• Collaborate with mechanical engineers and production teams for seamless integration.
• Provide technical guidance and peer reviews to junior engineers.

Required profile

• Proven experience in electrical design within defence, aerospace, nuclear or rail environments.
• Degree (BEng/MEng) in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
• Ability to obtain security clearance.
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or progression is a plus.

Required skills

• Electrical design for high‑integrity systems.
• 2D/3D CAD – AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN or SolidWorks Electrical.
• Power distribution and control circuitry.
• PCB integration.
• Design for harsh environments (IP ratings, thermal management, ruggedisation).
• Knowledge of maritime defence standards and certification processes.
