About the role
Kier is seeking an Electrical Engineer to join its MEICA Design team, working on water and wastewater treatment projects across Salford, Birmingham and Gerrards Cross. You will provide specialist electrical, instrumentation, control and automation engineering support, ensuring designs meet statutory and industry standards while delivering safe, reliable and cost‑effective solutions.
Key responsibilities
- Agree electrical and ICA design requirements with clients, challenge where necessary and develop outline to detailed designs.
- Produce technical specifications, functional design specifications, control philosophies, panel schedules and cable calculations.
- Specify LV equipment such as MCCs, motor starters, drives, transformers and power distribution panels.
- Carry out cable sizing, voltage‑drop, fault‑level, earthing and bonding calculations.
- Select and specify field instrumentation (flow, pressure, level, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, pH, chlorine, temperature, sludge).
- Provide ICA input for telemetry, SCADA, PLC, RTU and network communication architectures, and develop control system logic, set‑points, alarms and interlocks.
- Support project delivery through design coordination, site visits, surveys and SHE reporting.
Required profile
- Chartered Engineer status and membership of a relevant professional body (IET or IMechE).
- Extensive experience in water, wastewater or process industries, including hydraulic and pumping system design.
- Strong knowledge of Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) requirements and relevant engineering standards.
- Ability to work under pressure, make critical decisions and pass BPSS security checks.
- Proficiency with cable design software (Amtech) and interpretation of P&IDs, SLDs and loop diagrams.

- Instrumentation selection (flow, pressure, level, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, pH, chlorine, temperature, sludge).
- SCADA, PLC, RTU and telemetry system design.
- Control system logic development, set‑points, alarms and interlocks.
- Interpretation of P&IDs, single‑line diagrams and loop diagrams.
