Litigation Barrister – London

About the role

The Legists are seeking a Litigation Barrister to join the Government Legal Department in London. You will work on high‑profile public‑law matters, providing legal advice and representing government departments in court and tribunals.

Key responsibilities

• Advise Ministers and senior officials on litigation strategy and legal risk.
• Prepare and present cases in various courts, tribunals and hearings.
• Draft legal opinions, briefing notes and statutory guidance.
• Manage a diverse caseload across departments such as Home Office, Department for Business and Trade, Health and Social Care and Defence.
• Collaborate with other legal professionals, including solicitors, chartered legal executives and policy teams.

Required profile

• Qualified solicitor, barrister or chartered legal executive.
• Strong analytical judgement and ability to provide balanced, risk‑based advice.
• Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex legal issues clearly.
• Open‑minded, impartial and able to work collaboratively under pressure.
• For London postings, DV security clearance may be required.
