Mathematical Developer – Numerical Modelling (Cambridge)

About the role

We are seeking a Mathematical Developer with experience in numerical modelling or mathematical software development to join our Unified Supply Chain team in Cambridge Science Park. You will work on the flagship Assay Engine used for predictive modelling and blending in the oil, gas and refining industries.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and improve numerical models and their associated code.
• Investigate mathematical, algorithmic and software engineering problems and drive them to resolution.
• Take ownership of large or technically challenging work items, breaking them into manageable tasks.
• Work within an existing, partly legacy codebase while respecting team practices and introducing improvements.
• Lead technical projects and provide guidance to less‑experienced developers.
• Mentor and coach junior team members where appropriate.

Required profile

• Strong mathematical background.
• Programming ability in at least one relevant language such as C/C++ or C#.
• Experience in numerical modelling or mathematical software development.
• Degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline.

Required skills

• Experience with debugging tools.
• Proficiency with source control systems and CI/CD pipelines, e.g., git and Azure DevOps.
• Post‑graduate qualification (MSc, PhD or equivalent) is an advantage.
