Payroll Specialist – Temporary (Manchester)

About the role

Our client, a leading public services organisation, is seeking a Payroll Specialist to lead a large‑scale payroll of 3,000‑5,000+ employees. This temporary role will ensure compliant, accurate payroll processing while driving continuous improvement and supporting the wider employee lifecycle.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver payroll services with an employee‑centred mindset, focusing on trust, wellbeing and engagement.
• Oversee daily payroll operations, ensuring timely processing, statutory returns and reconciliations.
• Act as escalation point for complex or high‑risk payroll issues, especially during peak periods.
• Maintain compliance with UK payroll legislation, HMRC regulations and overseas payroll requirements.
• Coach and develop payroll colleagues through performance reviews and training.
• Lead payroll reporting, producing management information, statutory reports and KPIs.
• Prepare for internal and external audits, ensuring documentation is current and comprehensive.
• Identify and support process‑improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and service quality.

Required profile

• Proven track record delivering accurate, timely payroll for large organisations.
• Experience managing day‑to‑day payroll operations and resolving complex payroll issues.
• Background in coaching and developing payroll teams.
