Principal Hydrologist – Lead Flood Risk Projects

About the role

We are seeking a Principal Hydrologist to join a fast‑growing environmental consultancy in Manchester. This senior position offers technical leadership on a diverse portfolio of flood risk and water management projects across the UK, with hybrid working flexibility.

Key responsibilities

• Lead flood risk assessments, hydrological studies and hydraulic modelling from concept to delivery.
• Develop, calibrate and review hydraulic models using industry‑standard software.
• Prepare high‑quality technical reports and ensure project delivery standards.
• Manage client relationships and act as a trusted technical advisor.
• Mentor junior hydrologists and support their professional development.
• Engage with the Environment Agency, local authorities, water companies and developers.
• Contribute to business development, proposals and framework opportunities.

Required profile

• Degree in Hydrology, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Geography or a related field.
• Significant experience delivering UK hydrology and hydraulic modelling projects.
• Strong knowledge of UK flood risk policy and guidance.
• Chartered status or progress towards chartership is advantageous.
• Experience mentoring junior staff is desirable.
