Project Supervisor – Archaeology Fieldwork

About the role

Lead specified fieldwork projects, ensuring performance targets are met or exceeded, and guarantee the quality of archaeological recording and understanding. Assist in supervising larger, more complex projects led by senior officers.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver own fieldwork projects on time, within budget, and to quality and health‑and‑safety standards.
• Develop archaeologists and trainees through performance reviews, feedback, tool‑box talks and coaching.
• Ensure high‑quality archaeological records and oversee compilation of archives to required standards.
• Author typescript fieldwork reports efficiently and accurately.
• Provide regular progress reports on budget, logistics, staff and health‑and‑safety issues to project managers.
• Maintain accurate administrative records, including timesheets and equipment allocation sheets.

Required profile

• Sound knowledge of archaeological practice across all British periods.
• Experience supervising small to medium‑size fieldwork projects, including evaluations and excavations.
• Ability to author typescript fieldwork reports efficiently.
• Capability to organise, motivate, train, appraise and direct staff.
• Good working knowledge of relevant health‑and‑safety legislation.
