Public Law Solicitor – Birmingham

About the role

The client, a top‑tier law firm recognised by The Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners, is seeking an experienced Public Law Solicitor to join its Birmingham office on a permanent basis. You will work within a highly regarded Public Law department that handles complex civil‑liberties and judicial‑review matters for both publicly and privately funded clients.

Key responsibilities

• Report directly to the Department Director and lead all aspects of Public Law work.
• Provide technical expertise and guidance to solicitors, trainee solicitors and caseworkers.
• Supervise and manage caseloads, ensuring appropriate handling of unlawful detention, false imprisonment, abuse by detention staff and related matters.
• Oversee judicial‑review proceedings against HMRC, local authorities, NHS and planning bodies, including emergency orders and interim relief.
• Coordinate training and development initiatives within the department.

Required profile

• Qualified solicitor with substantial experience in public law, civil liberties and judicial review.
• Proven ability to manage and mentor junior lawyers and caseworkers.
• Strong track record of high‑success‑rate cases, including appeals to the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.
• Familiarity with Legal Aid Agency processes and collaboration with barristers’ chambers.
