School Caretaker – Birmingham

About the role

We are looking for a reliable caretaker to join a school environment in Birmingham. The role focuses on maintaining a safe, clean and welcoming setting for pupils, staff and visitors throughout the working day.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate daily activities of the caretaking team and act as key holder for building security.
• Perform reactive maintenance, addressing security, health and safety issues promptly.
• Carry out planned maintenance checks, including water hygiene and fire safety systems.
• Undertake DIY repairs such as decorating, carpentry, plumbing and glazing.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety policies and report any hazards.
• Maintain grounds by litter picking, leaf clearance and snow/ice gritting when required.
• Support cleaning operations, emergency cleaning, window cleaning and bin collection, liaising with contract cleaners.
• Handle porterage duties, receiving and delivering items across the site.

Required profile

• Willingness to work on a temporary, full‑time basis between 07:00 and 16:30.
• Right‑to‑work documentation and ability to obtain an enhanced DBS (cost of £56 unless already on the update service).
• Practical common‑sense approach, initiative and experience in caretaking or facilities maintenance.
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils.

Required skills

• DIY repair skills covering maintenance, decorating, carpentry, plumbing and glazing.
• Basic health and safety knowledge and ability to follow compliance procedures.
• Grounds‑maintenance abilities including litter picking and seasonal weather response.
• Cleaning and basic porterage tasks.
