SEN and Behaviour Mentor

About the role

This full‑time, long‑term position supports a specialist SEN school in Erdington, Birmingham. You will work with pupils across KS3, KS4 and Post‑16 who have autism and/or Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them engage safely and positively with their education.

Key responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small‑group support for students with autism and SEMH needs.
• Assist pupils in accessing learning during lessons and intervention sessions.
• Use positive behaviour management strategies to de‑escalate challenging situations.
• Help students regulate emotions and re‑engage with learning after dysregulation.
• Build trusting, professional relationships that promote independence.
• Implement behaviour support plans and EHCP targets consistently.
• Encourage development of social skills, emotional resilience and positive learning behaviours.
• Collaborate with teachers, SENCo, therapists and external professionals.
• Monitor progress and communicate updates to relevant staff.

Required profile

• Experience supporting children or young people with autism, SEMH or additional learning needs.
• Confidence in managing challenging behaviours with a calm, consistent approach.
• Patient, resilient and able to remain composed in demanding situations.
• Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.
• Ability to set clear boundaries while maintaining a nurturing approach.
• Commitment to helping young people overcome barriers to learning.
• Reliability, flexibility and interest in a long‑term temp‑to‑perm role.
