Senior GCP Data Engineer

About the role

We are looking for a Senior GCP Data Engineer to join a leading organisation’s Data and Platform Engineering team in Greater Manchester. The role involves designing, building and delivering modern data platforms in a cloud‑first, Data Mesh environment while mentoring junior engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design, development and delivery of cloud‑based data platforms and data products.
• Own the full data product lifecycle from design through decommissioning.
• Build and maintain robust ETL/ELT pipelines using SQL and Python.
• Collaborate with product managers, architects and engineers to solve technical and business challenges.
• Provide mentorship, code reviews and quality assurance for junior engineers.
• Produce clear documentation for technical and non‑technical audiences.
• Support CI/CD, environment control (dev/test/prod) and change management practices.
• Contribute to GCP platform development, especially BigQuery, within a Data Mesh architecture.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience as a Data Engineer with a strong focus on ETL/ELT.
• Advanced SQL and Python development skills.
• Hands‑on experience with DBT, Git, Terraform, Docker, IAM and Airflow (Composer).
• Proven experience on cloud platforms, preferably GCP (BigQuery); Azure or AWS also considered.
• Understanding of Data Mesh, test‑driven design and Agile delivery.
• Excellent communication and ability to lead by example.
• Experience supporting mergers, integrations or large‑scale organisational change is a plus.
