Senior Project Engineer – Track

About the role

The Senior Project Engineer (Track) will lead the application of engineering standards across multiple railway programmes, ensuring designs and constructions meet legislation, Railway Group and Network Rail requirements. You will work on four key routes in the North of England, reviewing supplier designs and supporting additional programmes as needed.

Key responsibilities

• Implement Network Rail systems and procedures to deliver cost‑effective, high‑quality, and safe design and construction.
• Review and approve track designs from suppliers, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and standards.
• Monitor competence of Project Engineers and provide functional guidance and briefing.
• Apply quantified and qualitative risk assessments, including HAZID analysis, to all projects.
• Ensure environmental aspects are managed in line with Network Rail Environmental Policy.
• Advise project and programme management on construction, testing, commissioning, and site supervision.
• Arrange and conduct contractor audits to verify safety, quality, and management system adequacy.

Required profile

• Proven experience in railway track design and early development phases, preferably with Network Rail.
• Strong understanding of Railway Group and Network Rail standards.
• Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and monitor engineering competence.
• Experience delivering projects across multiple programmes and routes.
