Structural Engineer – Bridges (Manchester)

About the role

The Council seeks a specialist Bridge Engineer to provide design, inspection and project‑management services for its bridge and highway structures portfolio. You will help streamline design and build processes, support the 2026/27 maintenance programme and ensure assets remain safe, compliant and operational.

Key responsibilities

• Manage routine, reactive and planned maintenance activities, including minor design‑and‑build schemes.
• Provide technical oversight of asset condition, structural defects and service performance.
• Review, assure and approve bridge and structural designs, specifications and drawings.
• Deliver bridge inspection programmes in line with CS 450, CS 451 and DMRB requirements.
• Lead project delivery from concept through to completion, coordinating contractors and monitoring performance.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety and CDM 2015 regulations.

Required profile

• Qualified structural or civil engineer with experience in bridge inspection, design and maintenance.
• Familiarity with CS 450, CS 451, DMRB standards and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
• Proven ability to manage projects, coordinate contractors and deliver minor maintenance schemes.
