Technical Lead – Traffic Engineering

About the role

This permanent, full‑time position leads the council’s traffic engineering function, shaping and delivering safe, compliant transport solutions across Bristol. You will act as the technical authority on Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) and guide high‑profile projects from concept to completion.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and expert advice on traffic engineering and TRO matters.
• Lead the design, development and delivery of complex, high‑visibility transport projects.
• Supervise, quality‑assure and sign‑off on traffic engineering schemes.
• Manage project budgets, resources and programme delivery to meet agreed outcomes.
• Collaborate with internal teams, external partners and stakeholders to implement transport solutions.
• Represent the council at public meetings, consultations and committee sessions.
• Support staff development and drive service improvement and innovation.

Required profile

• Proven experience as a traffic engineering professional with a strong track record of delivering transport projects.
• Deep knowledge of UK traffic legislation, policies and standards, especially TSRGD 2016 and TRO procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects, manage budgets and work with diverse stakeholder groups.
• Excellent communication skills for presenting technical information to councillors, stakeholders and the public.
• Proactive, solutions‑focused approach with a commitment to high‑quality outcomes.
