Trading Standards Technical Assistant – Birmingham

About the role

We are recruiting a Trading Standards Technical Assistant on behalf of Birmingham City Council to support the Trading Standards team in Aston. The role combines office‑based administrative duties with hands‑on operational support for investigations, helping to protect consumers and businesses across Birmingham.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and issue correspondence and maintain accurate records.
• Carry out data entry and general administrative tasks.
• Support evidence‑handling processes, including packing, labeling and transporting items using council vehicles.
• Provide practical assistance to Trading Standards Officers during field investigations.
• Conduct site visits and drive‑by observations to support ongoing enquiries.

Required profile

• Previous administrative experience with strong organisational skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage data accurately.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to drive council vehicles.
• Physical ability to lift and move evidence bags.
• Good communication skills, flexible attitude and willingness to undertake a range of tasks.
• Eligibility for a Basic DBS check.

What we offer

• Hourly rate of £13.45 plus holiday allowance (effective rate £15.07).
• Full‑time, Monday‑Friday, 9am‑5pm onsite role.
• Six‑month temporary contract with potential for extension or permanent placement.
• Valuable experience within Birmingham City Council’s Trading Standards service.
