Visual Impairment Specialist Teaching Assistant

About the role

The Visual Impairment Specialist Teaching Assistant will support pupils with partial or full sight loss across secondary schools in London. Working closely with teachers, SENCOs and external specialists, you will help students access the curriculum confidently and safely.

Key responsibilities

• Support visually impaired students in Key Stages 3, 4 and occasionally 5.
• Adapt learning materials into accessible formats such as enlarged text, braille and audio resources.
• Assist pupils in navigating the school environment independently.
• Facilitate the use of assistive technology and specialist equipment.
• Promote independence, confidence and inclusion within the classroom.
• Collaborate with teaching staff and specialist services to implement personalised support strategies.

Required profile

• Experience supporting individuals with visual impairments in an education or care setting.
• Willingness to learn about assistive technologies and accessibility adaptations.
• Patient, attentive and committed to inclusive education.
• Strong communication and organisational abilities.
• Comfortable working within a secondary school environment.
• Ability to obtain an enhanced DBS check.

Required skills

• Knowledge of braille, large‑print resources or mobility support is desirable but not essential.
