1:1 Outreach Tutor – BSL & Makaton Specialist

About the role

We are seeking a dedicated 1:1 Outreach Tutor to deliver personalised lessons to pupils in Birmingham who have been out of education for an extended period. The role focuses on re‑engaging learners, building confidence and supporting their return to mainstream schooling.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, prepare and deliver one‑to‑one lessons tailored to each pupil’s needs.
• Use Makaton and British Sign Language to facilitate communication and inclusion.
• Monitor progress, maintain records and work with Prospero Teaching to adjust support.
• Establish positive routines and provide encouragement to improve motivation and attainment.
• Collaborate with families to schedule flexible teaching sessions, typically around 15 hours per week per pupil.

Required profile

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification.
• Experience teaching in UK classrooms, preferably with SEND, SEMH or disengaged learners.
• Proficiency in Makaton and/or British Sign Language.
• Creative, patient and adaptable with a commitment to personalised learning.
