Approved Mental Health Professional – Emergency Duty Team

About the role

The Emergency Duty Team (EDT) requires an Approved Mental Health Professional to deliver statutory out‑of‑hours assessments and interventions for adults in mental health crisis. Working for Manchester City Council, you will ensure timely, lawful and person‑centred support while collaborating with police, ambulance services and health professionals.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out Mental Health Act assessments in line with legislation, Codes of Practice and local policies.
• Exercise independent professional judgment and coordinate assessments with medical practitioners, police, ambulance services and other agencies.
• Assess risk and decide on detention, community‑based alternatives or hospital admission.
• Complete statutory documentation accurately and within required timescales.
• Arrange safe conveyance and hospital admission when detention is required.
• Provide crisis intervention, emergency safeguarding and respond to adult emergency referrals.
• Offer advice and consultation to professionals on mental health legislation and crisis management.
• Maintain accurate case records using electronic recording systems.
• Participate in the EDT rota covering evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.

Required profile

• Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) registration.
• Ability to work out‑of‑hours on a rota that includes evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
• Willingness to register with Remedy Recruitment for locum positions.
• Successful completion of an Enhanced Disclosure (DBS) check.

Required skills

• Proficiency with electronic case recording systems.
