Assistant Market Manager – Retail Market (Manchester)

About the role

Manchester City Council is seeking a proactive Assistant Market Manager to support the daily operations of Gorton Retail Market. Working closely with the Market Manager, you will help create a safe, vibrant environment for traders and shoppers.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Market Manager in overseeing day‑to‑day market activities.
• Maintain strong relationships with traders, providing guidance and resolving issues.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety standards and address any risks.
• Handle financial tasks such as rent collection and account monitoring.
• Respond promptly to operational incidents to keep the market clean and welcoming.
• Support market events, promotions and continuous improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Excellent communication and organisational abilities.
• Experience in markets, retail or other customer‑facing environments.
• Ability to work independently, make sound decisions and adapt to changing priorities.
• Willingness to work evenings and weekends during peak trading periods.
• Comfortable handling difficult conversations and enforcing compliance.

Required skills

• Knowledge of health and safety legislation for public spaces.
• Experience collecting payments, chasing debts and managing compliance.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and use good judgement when escalating issues.
