Cemetery Worker – Gorton Cemetery

About the role

The Manchester City Council is seeking a dedicated Cemetery Worker for Gorton Cemetery. This full‑time, three‑month temporary role involves providing high‑quality, customer‑focused services to bereaved families, visitors and other stakeholders while maintaining the cemetery grounds.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out operational and environmental duties related to burial and cremation services, including grounds maintenance and horticulture.
• Operate a variety of mechanical equipment and tools safely and conduct daily checks on vehicles and equipment.
• Maintain cleanliness of equipment, report defects and ensure compliance with health‑and‑safety legislation and council policies.
• Collaborate with colleagues, funeral directors and bereaved families, responding courteously to service requests and queries.
• Complete basic work‑related documentation, interpret plans and follow instructions efficiently.

Required profile

• Physical fitness and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Experience in grounds maintenance, horticulture or a similar field (advantageous).
• Ability to operate mechanical equipment and tools safely.
• Strong interpersonal skills for effective interaction with colleagues, stakeholders and the public.
• Knowledge of health‑and‑safety practices relevant to the role.

What we offer

• Hourly rate of £14.47
• Full‑time schedule: Monday to Friday, 08:00‑16:00
