Children's Team Manager – Family Help

About the role

The Manchester City Council is seeking a Children's Team Manager to lead its Family Help team in South Manchester (Wythenshawe). This is a temporary, full‑time position overseeing a mixed caseload that includes child in need, child protection, pre‑proceedings, care proceedings and adoption support.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a team of 2 Advanced Practitioners and 4 Social Workers.
• Oversee initial assessments, interventions and ongoing casework across CIN, CP, PLO and care proceedings.
• Allocate new referrals via the AGS (MASH) system and ensure timely response.
• Provide leadership, supervision and professional development for the team.
• Maintain visibility and accessibility to staff, balancing office work with occasional home working.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in children’s social work, including child protection and care proceedings.
• Proven leadership and team‑development abilities.
• Ability to work within a test‑and‑learn service model and adapt to change.
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable children.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of child protection legislation and procedures.
• Experience with referral management systems such as AGS/MASH.
