Consultant Physician – Acute & General Medicine (Full‑time)

About the role

The NHS Lothian is seeking a Consultant Physician to join the Acute and General Medicine service at Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. This permanent, full‑time position (40 hours per week) offers the opportunity to lead patient care across acute admissions and general medical wards, with the potential to take on additional specialty sessions.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert clinical assessment and management for acute medical admissions and general medicine patients.
• Lead multidisciplinary teams, ensuring high‑quality, safe, and patient‑centred care.
• Deliver out‑of‑hours and on‑call services as part of the acute medicine rota.
• Contribute to teaching, audit, research and service development within the Directorate of Medicine.
• Support the delivery of additional specialty sessions where required.

Required profile

• Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
• Eligibility for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (CCT or within six months of confirmed entry, or Portfolio Pathway after award).
• Equivalent training and registration for non‑UK applicants.
• Proven experience in acute and general medicine at a senior level.
