Control Systems Engineer

About the role

Archangel Lightworks is seeking a Control Systems Engineer to develop, document and test control systems for both ground‑based and space‑based optical terminals. You will work on cutting‑edge laser communications technology that supports critical national infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and test algorithms for coarse and fine pointing systems, including electrical motors, fast steering mirrors, adaptive optics and optical sensors.
• Provide documentation and technical support to the software team for algorithm implementation.
• Create and maintain HIL real‑time simulations to verify control software against system requirements.
• Perform trade‑off analysis of control concepts, components and architectures.
• Maintain pointing budgets and ensure control systems meet overall system requirements.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years of commercial experience developing control systems for complex electromechanical, optical, aerospace or robotic applications.
• A degree in Control Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Robotics, Aerospace Engineering, Physics or a related discipline.
• Hands‑on experience designing, modelling, implementing and testing control algorithms for dynamic systems.
• Proficiency with modelling and simulation tools such as MATLAB and Simulink.
• Ability to translate system‑level requirements into control‑system specifications, test cases and verification activities.
