About the role
Barnardos is seeking a compassionate Early Help Autism Worker to deliver short‑term, home‑based autism programmes for children and families in Birmingham. Working under supervision, you will help families understand autism diagnoses and develop practical strategies to improve daily functioning.
Key responsibilities
- Provide one‑to‑one autism support sessions in family homes.
- Deliver the Cygnet autism parenting programme individually and in group settings.
- Support parents and carers with resources and strategies to enhance their understanding of autism.
- Collaborate with schools and other professionals to align interventions.
- Undertake specialist training as required.
Required profile
- In‑depth knowledge of autism and experience working with children and young people on the spectrum.
- Experience delivering PECS or Makaton to families, or willingness to learn.
- Proven ability to work one‑to‑one with parents, either in group programmes or individual sessions.
- Flexibility to travel to families’ homes and adapt to varied family needs.
Required skills
- Understanding of autism assessment processes.
- Familiarity with PECS, Makaton and the Cygnet parenting programme.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with children, parents, and professionals.
