Local Investigation Officer (Environmental Enforcement)

About the role
Join Birmingham City Council’s Waste Enforcement Team as a Local Investigation Officer, supporting a city‑wide environmental improvement initiative. Working 35 hours per week on a three‑month fixed‑term contract, you will spend most of your time in the field, engaging directly with residents to promote better waste practices.
Key responsibilities
- Act as the first point of contact in identified waste‑enforcement hotspots.
- Provide education, guidance and support to residents to encourage compliant behaviour.
- Investigate reported waste issues, gather evidence and record interactions.
- Escalate unresolved cases to the Waste Enforcement Team for further action.
- Maintain accurate records of visits, outcomes and follow‑up actions.
Required profile
- Experience in a customer‑facing role, comfortable speaking with diverse members of the public.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a calm, professional approach to difficult conversations.
- Ability to work independently, manage a personal workload and travel across Birmingham.
- Comfortable working outdoors and handling equipment provided by the employer.

What we offer
- Hourly rate of £13.45–£15.07 (equivalent to £15.07–£17.60 with holiday allowance) for the first 12 weeks, rising to £15.03–£17.60 thereafter.
- Valuable experience with a major UK local authority and its environmental services.
- All necessary field equipment supplied.
