Payroll & Pensions Specialist (Hybrid, 6-month contract)

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Payroll & Pensions Specialist to join our Birmingham team on a six‑month fixed‑term contract. The role will be based in the town centre with a hybrid working pattern (three days in the office, two days remote) and will focus on delivering accurate payroll and pension administration.

Key responsibilities

• Process monthly payroll accurately and within agreed deadlines, handling starters, leavers, adjustments and statutory payments.
• Maintain and update employee payroll records, including overtime, bonuses, deductions and benefits.
• Ensure compliance with HMRC regulations and UK payroll legislation, reconciling reports and resolving discrepancies.
• Administer workplace pension schemes, manage enrolments, opt‑ins/outs, contribution changes and support pension audits.
• Respond to payroll and pension queries from employees, managers and external stakeholders.
• Prepare payroll journals, support finance reconciliation and produce regular payroll and pension reports for management.
• Assist with year‑end activities such as P60s and other statutory reporting, and support internal and external audits.

Required profile

• Proven experience in end‑to‑end payroll processing within the UK.
• Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, HMRC requirements and statutory payments.
• Experience administering workplace pension schemes and auto‑enrolment obligations.
• Excellent numerical accuracy, attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information.
• Effective communication and stakeholder management skills.

• Proficiency in payroll systems.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel.
