Research Associate – Virtual Physics Laboratories

About the role
The University of Edinburgh is seeking a Grade 7 Research Associate to develop and evaluate virtual physics laboratories that broaden access to high‑quality practical STEM learning in northern Ghana. The position sits within the Institute for Digital Communications, College of Science & Engineering, and runs on a fixed‑term basis until April 2028.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the design, implementation, validation, and deployment of interactive, browser‑based virtual laboratory experiences.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and project partners in Ghana and internationally.
- Ensure simulations are scientifically rigorous, transparent about limitations, and functional on low‑cost, low‑resource devices.
- Maintain robust software development practices, including version control, testing, release management, and documentation.
- Support offline and low‑connectivity usage scenarios.
Required profile
- PhD or equivalent experience in physics, computer science, or a related discipline.
- Proven experience in research projects with international collaboration.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong communication skills for interdisciplinary interaction.
Required skills
- JavaScript and TypeScript.
- Vue.js, Three.js, WebGL, and WebAssembly.
- Experience with physics engines such as Rapier.
- Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and testing frameworks.
- Competence in release management and technical documentation.
