Communications Officer – Europe

About the role

The Open Society Foundations is seeking a Communications Officer for Europe to lead external communications across its European programmes and globally as needed. Based in London, you will shape the public narrative, manage reputational risk and amplify the organisation’s impact in a complex civic environment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement region‑specific communications strategies aligned with institutional priorities.
• Craft compelling narratives and positioning on issues central to the Open Society mission.
• Conduct proactive risk assessments and lead crisis communications, ensuring values‑aligned responses.
• Identify and execute strategic communications opportunities, leveraging news cycles and long‑term advocacy.
• Position senior leadership, experts and thought‑leaders in top‑tier domestic, regional and international media, building relationships with journalists and editorial boards.
• Oversee integrated media engagement, digital strategy, social‑media content, publications, executive and internal communications.

Required profile

• Senior‑level experience in external communications, public affairs or media relations, preferably within the nonprofit or international development sector.
• Proven ability to design and execute high‑impact communications strategies across multiple countries.
• Demonstrated expertise in reputational risk management and crisis communications.
• Strong network of media contacts across Europe and ability to cultivate new relationships.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of shaping public discourse.
