Health Care Support Worker – Glasgow City Wide Phlebotomy Service

About the role

The Health Care Support Worker will join the Glasgow City Wide Phlebotomy Service, delivering patient‑centred care in both clinical and home settings. Working under the direction of registered nurses, you will help collect blood samples, support health education and promote independent living for patients referred by GPs and other health teams.

Key responsibilities

• Collect blood samples by venepuncture following nursing instructions.
• Label, handle and document specimens according to protocol.
• Inform patients about appointment times and allocate domiciliary visits.
• Maintain accurate clinical records and ensure data protection compliance.
• Report incidents, including needle‑stick injuries, promptly.
• Keep phlebotomy equipment clean and safe.
• Assist in emergency situations by providing basic life support.
• Participate in personal development and practice support activities.

Required profile

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team without direct supervision.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• SVQ Level 3 in Healthcare or equivalent experience.
• Awareness of cultural, gender and lifestyle factors affecting patient health.
