Land Ranges & Training Areas Officer (HEO)

About the role

The Land Ranges & Training Areas Officer (Higher Executive Officer) supports Headquarters Regional Command in ensuring that Army training environments are safe, compliant and effective. Working across a network of military, civilian and external partners, you will play a central role in delivering the "Safe Place to Train" agenda.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the HQ RC focal point for Safe Place assurance, guaranteeing that ranges and training areas meet required safety standards.
• Lead 2nd Line of Defence assurance activities for land ranges and fieldcraft training areas.
• Plan, schedule and conduct annual assurance inspections, produce reports and recommend corrective actions.
• Monitor and support resolution of issues identified through 3rd Line assurance reviews.
• Provide expert advice to Range Approving Officers, Range Administering Units and other stakeholders on safety, policy and compliance.
• Interpret and implement MOD range safety policy and Defence standards across the area of responsibility.
• Maintain oversight of Range Standing Orders, Risk Assessments and Environmental Impact Assessments.
• Support range certification processes, including issuing and re‑issuing safety certifications for permanent and temporary ranges.
• Organise and contribute to Range Boards for new, modified, existing or closing facilities.
• Advise on ranges operating under waivers, managed non‑compliance or special conditions and liaise with external authorities.

Required profile

• Proactive and highly organised with strong attention to detail.
• Experience in safety assurance, risk assessment and compliance within a regulated environment.
• Good understanding of MOD range safety policy and Defence standards.
• Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of military and civilian stakeholders.
• Willingness to travel and undertake occasional overnight stays.
