Project Manager – Civil Engineering & Tunnelling

About the role

Joseph Gallagher is seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead civil engineering and tunnelling works on sites across the North East Region. The role involves ensuring safety, commercial performance, and high‑quality delivery on complex infrastructure projects.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain a safe and efficient site environment in line with company standards.
• Maximise commercial performance and manage contract budgets.
• Produce procurement schedules and coordinate with the procurement team to secure necessary resources.
• Forecast costs, monitor scope changes, and manage unplanned work expenses.
• Report risks and opportunities to senior management.
• Deliver work to specified quality standards, overseeing Project Plans, RAMS, ITPs and waste management plans.
• Maintain detailed site diaries and records.
• Drive cost reductions and challenge the status quo.

Required profile

• Proven experience managing tunnelling and shaft projects in highly regulated UK environments.
• Specific experience with Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) is essential.
• Broad civil engineering background is advantageous.
• Degree or HNC in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
• SMSTS certification.
• Ability to work with NEC contracts and manage contract changes.
• Strong design, risk, and cost control management capabilities.
