Senior Accountant – SME Portfolio Management

About the role

This senior accountant position is with a forward‑thinking accountancy practice in Cheshire. You will work directly with a portfolio of SME clients, delivering high‑quality accounting services while supporting the firm’s growth ambitions.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a diverse portfolio of SME clients, ensuring service excellence and client satisfaction.
• Oversee preparation of financial statements and tax returns in line with FRS 102 and regulatory requirements.
• Take over existing client books, lead new client onboarding and maintain strong relationships.
• Develop and implement accounting policies, leveraging technology such as FreeAgent, Xero and Engager.
• Supervise, mentor and develop junior accounting staff.
• Collaborate with leadership on growth strategies and new business opportunities.
• Handle day‑to‑day practice operations, including resource allocation and workflow management.
• Represent the firm at industry events and ensure AML compliance.

Required profile

• ACA, ACCA, AAT or QBEC qualified accountant.
• Minimum 3 years experience in an accountancy practice, with at least 1 year of portfolio management.
• Strong technical knowledge of accounting standards (FRS 102) and tax compliance.
• Proven leadership and team‑management abilities.
• Up‑to‑date with relevant laws, regulations and AML requirements.
• Excellent communication and client‑service skills.
• Eligible to work in the UK (no sponsorship).
