Software Engineer – Python & Java (Maritime R&D)

About the role

We are looking for a Software Engineer with strong Python and Java expertise to join our Maritime Internal Research & Development team. Based in Farnborough with primary remote flexibility, you will help shape AI, autonomy and machine‑learning capabilities for national security and defence applications.

Key responsibilities

• Develop software requirements and deliver robust software solutions.
• Contribute to architecture and design baselines, including service‑oriented and micro‑services patterns.
• Experiment rapidly to meet mission‑focused use cases and demonstrate capabilities.
• Integrate bespoke and COTS software products, configure toolchains and manage releases.
• Model and simulate software behaviour, investigate issues and manage technical risk.
• Liaise with UK‑wide and global colleagues, suppliers and end‑users.

Required profile

• Eligibility for UK Security Check (SC) clearance and sole UK nationality.
• Experience working in Agile development environments.
• Ability to collaborate with systems engineering and test teams.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Python and Java (experience with C++ and JavaScript is desirable).
• Secure DevOps and CI/CD pipeline knowledge (Jira, Bitbucket, JFrog, Ansible, Grafana, Splunk, Confluence, Kubernetes).
• Design and implementation of service‑oriented and micro‑services architectures.
• Containerisation experience, preferably Docker.
• Use of automated testing frameworks and tools.
