Staff Nurse – General Surgery (Band 5)

About the role

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is seeking a Band 5 Staff Nurse to join the General Surgery team at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. This full‑time permanent position offers the chance to work in a fast‑paced acute surgical environment, providing high‑quality, compassionate care to patients with a wide range of surgical needs.

Key responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individual programmes of care to deliver high standards of nursing care.
• Provide safe, effective postoperative and acute surgical care and support patient recovery.
• Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and the multidisciplinary team.
• Maintain accurate, timely patient records in line with professional and organisational standards.
• Supervise, support and mentor students and less experienced staff.
• Contribute to the day‑to‑day organisation of the ward and ensure effective use of resources.
• Promote a safe clinical environment by adhering to infection prevention, health and safety policies.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with a current NMC UK PIN.
• Degree in Nursing or an equivalent recognised qualification.
• Knowledge of acute surgical nursing care and common general surgical conditions.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team in a busy clinical environment.
• Strong communication, organisational and time‑management skills.
• Commitment to continuing professional development and revalidation requirements.
• Ability to deliver compassionate, patient‑centred care in line with NHSGGC values.
