Traffic Engineer – Highway Improvement Schemes

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Traffic Engineer to deliver a wide range of traffic and highway improvement schemes for a local authority in South Gloucestershire, based in Bristol. The role involves managing projects from concept through to construction completion, with a focus on pedestrian, cycle and traffic calming measures.

Key responsibilities

• Design and supervise traffic engineering schemes from conception to implementation.
• Liaise with in‑house teams on street lighting, structures and traffic signals.
• Prepare construction information and Health & Safety documentation in line with CDM Regulations.
• Monitor project budgets and programme delivery.
• Carry out public consultations and engage with residents, councillors and parish councils.
• Work with legal teams to advertise Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) and prepare objection reports.
• Provide design support during the construction phase and attend site visits as required.

Required profile

• Qualified Traffic Engineer with relevant highways and traffic engineering experience.
• Strong knowledge of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB).
• Thorough understanding of the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD) and the Traffic Signs Manual.
• Experience preparing and delivering traffic management and highway improvement schemes.
• Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and communicate effectively with both technical and non‑technical audiences.
• Full, current UK driving licence and willingness to attend site visits.
