2nd/3rd Line Cyber Defence Engineer

About the role

We are looking for a 2nd/3rd Line Cyber Defence Engineer to join our team in Newport. The role supports SOC engineers and analysts, handling change, release and maintenance activities while ensuring compliance with KPIs and SLAs.

Key responsibilities

• Support SOC engineers and analyst activities.
• Manage change and release processes.
• Ensure scheduled maintenance and patching are approved and delivered within KPI/SLA targets.
• Produce reports on SLA performance, system performance, obsolescence, risk and availability.
• Maintain systems, including remote standalone platforms.
• Provide advice and guidance for scheduled patching activities.
• Liaise with Newport MRO for daily checks and health status of systems.
• Monitor audit and security logs for breaches and malware across all zones.
• Perform system backups and restore SOC tooling.
• Deploy approved patches, software fixes and policy updates.

Required profile

• Experienced cyber engineer with strong networking background, preferably with MoD contract experience.
• Knowledge of Splunk is highly advantageous.
• Proven experience in scheduled maintenance and patching to approved deadlines.
• Previous experience maintaining SOC systems.
• Autonomous, precise, reliable and solution‑oriented attitude.
• Ability to handle multiple incidents in parallel.

Required skills

• Good knowledge of SOC tooling including IDPS, firewalls, SIEM, Splunk, email and web protection.
• Implementation and fault‑finding of firewall technologies such as Cisco ASR, Palo Alto and Fortinet.
• Strong understanding of network technologies.
• Experience with scripting and programming.
• Experience with Windows and Red Hat server systems and CIS hardening.
