Accounts Assistant Manager – Birmingham

About the role

We are seeking an Accounts Assistant Manager to join a well‑established accountancy practice in Birmingham. The role provides extensive exposure to client management, staff development and business advisory work, offering a clear path for progression within the firm.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a varied portfolio of limited companies, sole traders and partnerships.
• Prepare and review statutory accounts in line with UK GAAP, FRS 102 and FRS 105.
• Review bookkeeping and management accounts produced by junior team members.
• Act as the primary point of contact for clients, building strong relationships.
• Provide business advisory support and identify value‑adding opportunities.
• Review VAT returns and support corporation tax compliance.
• Supervise, coach and develop Junior Accountants, Apprentices and other team members.
• Ensure assignments meet agreed budgets, deadlines and quality standards.
• Collaborate with senior management on workflow planning, resource allocation and departmental development.
• Contribute to process improvements and maintain high technical standards.

Required profile

• ACA or ACCA qualified.
• 5‑8 years’ experience within an accountancy practice, preferably at Senior Accountant level.
• Proven experience managing a client portfolio.
• Strong technical knowledge of UK accounting standards.
• Experience reviewing technical work and supporting junior colleagues.
• Excellent analytical ability and attention to detail.
• Commercial awareness with the ability to identify client opportunities.

Required skills

• ACA / ACCA qualification.
• UK GAAP, FRS 102, FRS 105.
• VAT and corporation tax compliance.
• Proficiency with accounting software.
• Advanced Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
